FREMONT ELKS DRUG AWARENESS CONTEST - 2020
The Elks have partnered with the DEA to further educate people on the dangers of drugs. One of the ways that is done is by holding an annual competition for students beginning at grade 3 and continuing through high school. The students from grades 3 thru 5 draw a poster based on the selected topic for the year. The students grades 6 thru 8 compose an essay based on the same topic with the high school students submitting a video presentation. Fremont Lodge began actively participating in these contests in 2020. We host a dinner for the winners from our lodge along with their parents and teachers as a thank you for encouraging the students. Those winning entries are submitted to the District level, if they win at that level, the entries are submitted at the State level, and should they be successful there, the entries are submitted for the National competition. The winners of the National competition will see their entries in the coloring book that the Elks produce each year for use in promoting Drug Awareness. Since we have begun entering these competitions, we have been able to claim a State winner and this past year had a 2nd place finisher at the State level. The competition is open to all qualifying students in the area from San Leandro to Fremont including Castro Valley.
